Raising the Bismarck
Mar. 21st, 2008 10:14 amWell some more on the buld and what it's like building the ship. So far it's been not too hard going to build the ship as it's desgined with beginners in mind. But with the modifications I am doing to the hull and main decking it has been slow going. So I thought I would let you in what I have been doing and what may be coming in the future. :)
1. Fixed stern removable deck to centre removable deck. Done!
2. Joining bow deck to removable deck. Done!
3. Cutouts for operational 3rd shaft. In Progress!
4. Drilled out stern resin for 3rd. prop shaft. Not Started!
5. Drilling frames for 3rd propshaft. Not Started!
6. Drilling frames for wiring. Not Started!
Think thats it for now for the modifications.....
As you can see I still have lots to do along with the normal building of the ship. The model ship is being built from a magazine partwork by Hachette Partworks in 140 issues @ 1 issue per week. So almost 3 years to build the model and is 125cm (49") long by 18cm, (7") wide. The model is being built from birchwood ply, lime wood (for the decking planks) and various metals, brass, bronze, and copper wire and aluminium with some light sensitive parts made from either brass or nickel silver. The wooden parts are laser cut and fit very accurately, (well most of the time they do) with some of the metal parts being machine turned for accuracy. There is also a few interesting shaped plastic parts for the super structure.

How did I become interested in this project, well I've always like ships and boats and especially the Bismarck. It's a nice looking ship with lots of detail for modelling, (bit hard to really say just why I like her). I saw the Titanic, (which was a 3 year build, which is what put me off building her). But when I saw the Bismarck at the newsagent I decided I would build her in spite of the almost 3 year build time. :)
The magazine is $14.95 per week, (Total $2093.00 Australian Dollars) and the sections of the magazine are the following:-
1. Step by step assembly guide.
2. Tips for the model builder.
3. The Bismarck - History and Destiny.
4. The legend of the warship.
5. Famous maritime battles.
6. A chronicle of naval warfare.
For anyone building the Bismarck and seeing this blog, try visiting the following sites Build the Bismarck.co.uk and the forum Build the Bismarck Forum. A great bunch of people and all very helpful. You can see my build diary on the site at this link skyfire's Build.
